Abstract:

Background: Arsenic is a well-documented human carcinogen widely distributed in the environment. Chronic exposure of humans to inorganic arsenicals causes many adverse health effects. The present work was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of Syzygium cumini seed extract (SCE) on arsenic-induced genotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in Wistar albino rats. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into five groups of six animals each. Group 1 served as normal control, Group 2 received SCE, 200 mg/kg daily, and Group 3 received arsenic, 100 ppm in drinking water. Groups 4 and 5 received SCE, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg, respectively, daily, simultaneously with 100 ppm arsenic in drinking water. After 60 days, blood samples were collected and comet assay was performed using isolated lymphocytes. Activities of serum marker enzymes were assayed and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels were estimated. Serum catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and blood reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured.      Results: Exposure to arsenic caused a significant increase in serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and bilirubin, accompanied by a decrease in total protein levels as well as CAT and SOD activities, and GSH. Enhanced LPO and lymphocyte DNA damage was also observed in arsenic-administered rats. The arsenic-induced toxicity was significantly reversed by the simultaneous administration of SCE at both the lower and higher dosages. Conclusions: This investigation offers strong evidence for the hepato-protective and antioxidative effects of SCE against arsenic-induced oxidative stress.

Pharmacokinetics of Caffeic Acid from Methanol Seed Extract of Syzygium cumini L in Rats

Purpose: To describe caffeic acid-based pharmacokinetics of methanol extract of seed of Syzygium cumini L. in rats. Methods: A dose of the extract (500 mg, equivalent to 37.135 mg caffeic acid) was administered orally to 6 male Wister rats, weighing 200 ± 10 g. Blood samples (0.5 mL), collected from the tail vein at 0, 15, 30, 60, 120, 240 and 720 min, were processed and analyzed using high per...

Grape Seed Extract (Vitisvinifera) Alleviate Neurotoxicity and Hepatotoxicity Induced by Lead Acetate in Male Albino Rats

Grape seed extracts (GSE) are very potent antioxidant and exhibit numerous interesting pharmacologic activities, including an antioxidant property, and has been suggested to be of use in treatment of several diseases. The present study has been undertaken to investigate the protective and therapeutic effect of GSE against lead-induced neuro and hepatotoxicity in rat. Male albino rats were divid...

Amelioration of arsenic-induced toxic effects in mice by dietary supplementation of Syzygium cumini leaf extract

Arsenic created a serious public health problem in Bangladesh due to its presence in groundwater and dissemination of the toxic effects to millions of people. The scarcity of the treatment options to manage this affected population has made the situation much worse. To find a promising treatment option, this study was undertaken to examine the ameliorating roles of Syzygium cumini leaf extract ...

Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze Extract Ameliorates Chronic Ethanol-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Albino Rats

The goal of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of aqueous extract of Camellia sinensis or green tea extract (AQGTE) in chronic ethanol-induced albino rats. All animals were divided into 4 groups in the study for a 5-week duration. 50% ethanol was given orally to the rats with two doses (5 mg/kg bw and 10 mg/kg bw) of AQGTE. Ethanol administration caused a significant inc...
